THE SWITCH IS ON

oped checkThe hunt is on in UT and CO for two survivalists .......

If you think the leap from "survivalist" to "domestic terrorist" is too wide a gap to be bridged, reflect for a moment on the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, and the subsequent campaign to vilify the word "militia"....

That murder, terrorism, and other manner of criminal activity are unacceptable goes without saying, and the word "unacceptable" isn't appropriate to express my disdain for such activity. My concern here is that it appears the word "survivalist" will take on new meaning to the whole country from this time forward, rather like "militia" did after the OKC bombing. It is the labeling:

♦labeling of a segment of the population that has both the right and responsibility to practice and teach emergency preparedness to friends, family members and others interested in surviving natural and man-made disasters ~ SURVIVALIST

♦labeling of a segment of the population that seeks to return this nation to its former glory by closer adherence to the Constitution and Bill of Rights, some of whom devote limitless time and energy seeking political and practical changes in government and reduction of federal intrusion into local issues ~ CONSTITUTIONALIST

♦labeling of a segment of the population that takes the Second Amendment and the spirit in which it was written seriously enough to devote hours to its defense against those who seek to legislate the Second to an unmarked grave ~ SECOND AMENDMENT ACTIVIST or PRO-GUNNER

♦labeling of a segment of the population whose literal interpretation of the Second Amendment has led them to join together to form citizens' militias, the purpose of which is to defend liberty in the face of tyranny ~ MILITIA

♦the labeling of a segment of the population whose love of shooting and competitive natures bring them together in places like Camp Perry to test their skills ~ DCM SHOOTER

♦labeling of a segment of the population that waves the flag proudly, believes in the sovereignty of our nation, and raises its voice against the mismanagement of this nation through lobbying, voting, and protest efforts ~ PATRIOT

♦labeling of a segment of the population that procures food using a combination of mechanical implements and stealth rather than the shopping cart approach ~ HUNTER

You may look at the above items and find yourself in there. If you're a DCM competition shooter, you may wonder if you should be included in this list. I just thought I'd exercise a little one-upmanship and beat them to the punch. I'm not a DCM Shooter, but I know some competitive shooters who have grave concerns that gun-control mania is going to slop over onto them in the process.

I'm all of the rest. I've worn all the labels and I've experienced disapproval for each of the them. I picture my mother jerking her head up from the morning paper and asking "Are these the kind of people my daughter associates with??" in abject horror. She did the same at the time of the OKC bombing; as soon as the word "militia" showed up in the news, the association was made in her mind, and that was that! No correction boldly placed in a 2cm x 2cm box on page 75 of the newspaper would change her mind; no amount of evidence to the contrary would sway her - the militia was responsible for OKC and that was that. Because I was militia, I was somehow tainted by the label incorrectly attached by the incorrectly labeled "objective" (but actually sensationalist) mainstream media.

I read with interest Heston's comments during the NRA Convention - "Mr. Clinton, sir. Americans didn't trust you with our health care systems and we didn't trust you with gays in the military and we don't trust you with our 21-year-old daughters. We sure ... don't trust you with our guns,"because it immediately invoked the thought that we shouldn't place complete trust in the mainstream media for our news, and certainly not for our labels...
